Family Accuses Greenville Pastor of Entering Home After Death and Taking Over 40 Pairs of Shoes Without Permission

A  Greenville, North Carolina pastor has officially been banned from attending the funeral of a man many in the community loved and respected.

According to a Facebook post obtained by The North Carolina Beat, a man named John Dew, speaking on behalf of the family of the late Stephen Williams, made it clear that Pastor Maurice Davenport II, pastor of Greater Bazemore Temple, in Windsor, is not welcome at the upcoming funeral.

“Per the wishes of Stephen Williams’ mother and family, we must respectfully inform Maurice Davenport II of the request not to attend Stephen’s funeral services,” the Facebook post read.

Dew’s message revealed that Stephen once held Maurice in “very high regard”, but as time went on, their friendship faded.

But the real drama started on the day Stephen died.

John Dew dropped a bombshell when he alleged that Pastor Maurice Davenport entered Stephen’s apartment using a key—without the family’s knowledge or permission—and took over 40 pairs of Stephen’s shoes.

“Being a real friend, the mere thought of taking anything out of his apartment, especially without the family’s knowledge, should have been the least of our concern after his passing,” Dew said.

According to the post, Maurice claimed that Stephen asked him to give the shoes to his younger sister.

But the family wasn’t buying it.

“You claimed Stephen told you to give them to his young sister, yet there is no proof of this and no evidence that you attempted to call or text her beforehand,” Dew wrote. “In fact, you only contacted her once the post was made public that someone had stolen Stephen’s shoes.”

He added that Maurice only returned the shoes after Stephen’s sister went public and his mother directly spoke to him.

When The North Carolina Beat reached out to Pastor Maurice Davenport Friday afternoon, he denied the allegations.

When asked if he removed the shoes from Stephen’s apartment, he replied, “no.” Despite that, he said he will respect the family’s decision and not attend the service.

“I love everybody…his family, his mom, she’s wonderful, got a great son and he was just a great guy,” Maurice told The North Carolina Beat. “I don’t have anything negative to say, they are great people, I will respect their wishes.”

Stephen Williams was a Cosmetology Instructor at Beaufort County Community College, where he was recently promoted. He passed away last Sunday, leaving behind a wave of grief and admiration from those who knew and loved him.
