A devastating car crash in Johnston County has claimed the lives of two best friends and left six children injured, one critically, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The crash happened Saturday around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Government Road and Jack Road near Clayton. Authorities said a 2016 Jeep, driven by 24-year-old Emely Rosario Diaz of Clayton, failed to stop at a stop sign at the T-intersection. The vehicle veered off-road, struck a ditch, and went airborne, crashing into a tree.
Police said the SUV was traveling at speeds of 70 mph.
Diaz, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was accompanied by her close friend, 23-year-old Sade Nadia Tomlinson of Knightdale. Tomlinson, seated in the front passenger seat, succumbed to her injuries en route to the hospital.
In the backseat were six children under the age of 12, none of whom were wearing seatbelts, according to investigators. All six were transported to the hospital, with one child suffering critical injuries.
Investigation Highlights Contributing Factors
Preliminary findings indicate that speed and failure to stop at the stop sign played significant roles in the crash. Everyone inside the vehicle did not have on seatbelts.
