A community is shaken after a teenager was gunned down Tuesday night outside Windsor Elementary School in Bertie County, North Carolina.

According to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), the shooting went down on or near the school’s basketball court where a group of young people were playing a friendly game. That peace was shattered when a fight broke out—ending with one teen fatally shot.

What We Know So Far

The victim, whose name has not been officially released by police, has been identified by sources to The North Carolina Beat as 16-year-old Damari Harrell, a young soul who would’ve turned 17 next month.

Damari Harrell, 16, was fatally shot near a basketball court at Windsor Elementary School in Bertie County, just weeks before his 17th birthday.

Authorities have not confirmed who pulled the trigger, the age of the alleged shooter, or whether any arrests have been made.

Investigation Ongoing

As of Wednesday, the SBI says they are still piecing together what happened and continue to interview witnesses.

No word yet on what sparked the initial fight, but the aftermath has left a family devastated.
