Duke University Hospital in Durham, faced unexpected flooding late Thursday night after a chilled water pipe burst inside a wall, sending water rushing through several areas of the facility, including the emergency room.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 11:40 p.m. and caused significant flooding in “ancillary areas” of the hospital. Fortunately, inpatient areas were not impacted, and the hospital assured the public that all patients in the ER at the time received appropriate care despite the disruption.
The hospital has temporarily redirected incoming ambulance patients to nearby facilities, including Duke Regional, UNC Hospitals, and WakeMed. Patients arriving by private vehicle are being treated in unaffected areas of the hospital, according to a statement from Duke University Hospital.
The timeline for full repairs remains unclear, with hospital staff working diligently to restore affected areas.
Social media captured the extent of the flooding, with videos showing water flowing through the hospital’s hallways in the early hours of Friday morning.
