DURHAM MOM CHARGED FOR DEFENDING SON IN SHOOTING

The city is in shock after a Durham mom was charged in connection with a neighborhood shootout that tragically left her 17-year-old son dead.

According to Durham Police, the incident happened Wednesday night, July 23, just before 8 p.m., on the 1000 block of Sherwood Drive. When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A second victim, identified as 17-year-old Dominic Chappell, was driven to the hospital by private vehicle but later died from his injuries. Police confirmed that several apartments and cars in the area were struck by gunfire during the shootout.

Mom Charged While Defending Her Son

Warrants obtained by The North Carolina Beat reveal that on Thursday, July 24, Dominic’s mother, Dominica Latrice Chappell, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Authorities allege she assaulted Octavius Amos with a firearm.

Sources told The North Carolina Beat that Dominica was protecting her son after a shootout erupted in the neighborhood. The source said she saw gunmen targeting her son and fired back in an attempt to save him.

Police have not yet released further details about what led up to the deadly incident.

Dominica was booked on a $20,000 bond and has since bonded out.

No Arrests for Dominic’s Death

Despite Dominica’s arrest, no suspects have been taken into custody for Dominic’s death. The community is outraged, with many asking how a mother can be charged for trying to save her child.

Durham Police continue to investigate the deadly shootout. Anyone with information is urged to contact authorities immediately.
