The Craven County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the heartbreaking and sudden loss of one of its own after Sergeant Margie “Nikki” Koonce of New Bern passed away at her home on Friday, May 15, 2026.
The devastating announcement was made on the department’s Facebook by Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes, who described Sergeant Koonce as a respected law enforcement officer who dedicated her life to protecting and serving the community.
According to the sheriff’s office, Sergeant Koonce was “well loved” and deeply respected throughout the department and the Craven County community.
“It is with deep respect and sorrow that we announce the passing of Craven County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Margie ‘Nikki’ Koonce,” Sheriff Hughes said in an official statement released Friday.
