A Perdue driver killed in Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel crash has been identified as a 61-year-old North Carolina man after his tractor-trailer plunged into the icy waters below early Sunday morning.
A tragic scene happened in Virginia over the weekend after a Perdue Farms tractor-trailer driver lost his life when his rig careened off the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and plunged into the icy waters below.
Officials confirmed that Ronnie Andrews, 61, of Robersonville, North Carolina, died following the devastating crash Sunday morning near Cape Charles.
According to multiple reports, the tractor-trailer was traveling southbound around 6:30 a.m. near the North Channel Bridge, just south of Fisherman Island. For reasons that are still under investigation, the truck went over the west side of the bridge and fell into the frigid Chesapeake Bay below.
Authorities say no other vehicles were involved and weather was not a factor. By Sunday night, crews had recovered the driver’s body along with the tractor and trailer from the water.
In a statement, Perdue Farms confirmed the heartbreaking loss.
“We are heartbroken to confirm that a Perdue driver has passed away following an accident on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
The company described Andrews as a valued member of their team whose loss will be deeply felt across the organization.
Andrews’ widow shared that her husband had been driving for Perdue for about five years. She reportedly spoke to him the night before the crash and said he gave no indication that he was tired or experiencing issues.
Right now, there are more questions than answers surrounding what caused the truck to leave the roadway.
Officials with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel authority have not released additional details, and authorities continue working to determine exactly what happened in those early morning hours.
