Video Shows Excessive Force Used Against Convicted Sex Offender During Arrest After Chase in Chadbourn

Convicted sex offender arrested after high-speed chase

A convicted registered child sex offender was punched and kicked by officers during his arrest following a chase in Chadbourn, North Carolina news, according to a video circulating social media.

Multiple sources sent and tagged The North Carolina Beat in the video footage showing who eyewitnesses say is Deon Shareef Taplin being forcefully subdued by law enforcement officers. In the footage, one officer is seen grabbing Taplin by his hair to bring him down, while another appears to kick him in the back as he lies on the ground and another officer can be seen putting his gun back in its holster.

According to local news, the pursuit began after a suspect—whom witnesses identify as Taplin—allegedly crashed into a Columbus County Sheriff’s deputy’s Ford F-150 truck on Dessie Road at approximately 8:30 p.m., Monday night.

The impact reportedly caused the deputy’s truck, which had three deputies inside, to overturn. Local news outlet WWAY confirmed that all three deputies sustained minor injuries and were transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment.

Authorities say the chase continued toward Chadbourn, where the suspect eventually crashed and was taken into custody.

According to the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry, in October 2015, Taplin was convicted of three counts of indecent liberties with a 12-year-old child. He was 18 at the time of the offenses. As a result, Taplin was required to register as a sex offender for 10 years which started on April 13, 2018, with his registration set to expire in 2028.
