The Winston-Salem Police Department in North Carolina has reported the unfortunate passing of a man who experienced a medical emergency while in their custody on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Yerkoy Shuler, a 42-year-old resident of Winston-Salem. According to official statements, Shuler was pulled over for a traffic violation at Sheraton and Leo street around 1 a.m.
While in the back of a police patrol car, Shuler suffered a medical episode and lost consciousness. A video circulating on social media depicts officers removing an unconscious Shuler from the patrol car, with his hands still cuffed behind his back, and placing him on the ground. CPR was initiated after two minutes and 33 seconds according to our time, upon realizing Shuler’s condition. Despite the efforts, Shuler was pronounced deceased at approximately 10 a.m. Friday.

AED.com states that “performing CPR and defibrillation with an AED within the first 3-5 minutes can dramatically increase survival odds.” But the problem is it is currently unknown how long Shuler was in the backseat of the police car before being noticed by officers.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation in accordance with standard procedures for deaths occurring in police custody.
Additionally, an internal investigation led by the Professional Standards Division will also be conducted.
