It has been five years since a brutal attack left then – 72-year-old Nell Pittman fighting for her life. On January 2, 2020, Pittman, who was picking up food from Jessie Bell’s Soul Food on East Vernon Avenue in Kinston, was violently struck in the head three times with a metal baseball bat by an unknown assailant attempting to steal her car.
The attack left Pittman with a severe brain injury, and she remains immobile and nonverbal after emerging from a coma.
The Unsolved Crime
Despite a reward of up to $28,500, including an offer from then-Governor Roy Cooper and an artist’s rendering of the attacker, no arrests have been made in connection with the crime.

5th Anniversary Event: Honoring Pittman’s Resilience
To mark the 5th anniversary of the attack, a community event will be held on Thursday, January 2, 2024, from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Jessie Bell’s Soul Food, located on East Vernon Avenue. The event aims to honor Pittman’s resilience and strength while also encouraging community engagement.
The event will feature free food, music, and an opportunity for local residents to learn about volunteer opportunities and community initiatives, according to the event flyer.
